We were in Asunción three nights and very quickly understood why visiting Paraguay makes sense.

The Paraguayans are very friendly, smile with their whole being, are open and are always ready to assist your cause. There is always a smile on their faces and they share what they know with pleasure. They respond to your comments or jokes openly and join conversations with no problem. In the stores, if they don't have what you are looking for, they willingly suggest other places to look and it's not unusual for them to accompany you to ensure that you arrive safely. If you stray into an area where safety is a concern you will find someone advising you to leave, and making sure that you do so.

The museums in Asunción are free, well-curated, and with good information, at least for our purposes. In the museum at the Cabildo we were able to learn about the Paraguayan culture, there are small exhibits which stimulate interest in various aspects, and a library which allowed us to explore the history of the country. The "Casa de la Independencia" (Independence House) was very useful in learning more of the history of the republic and the development of independence; the staff where prepared to answer our questions with precision and clarity. The City Museum holds a large collection of items and photographs which tell the story of Paraguayan history well and is very useful in broadening one's knowledge.

Food is another area of exploration, in Paraguay they eat differently, and while meat remains a major element, yuca and corn return to the table and various forms including, Paraguyan Soup, fish soup, manioc, "chipa guazú" (a yuca pancake), corn bread, and other items appear in the diet. In terms of empanadas, we came across typical forms in meat and chicken versions. It is necessary to comment also on the fact that, 10 years after Marce's first visit to Asunción, the Lido Bar continues to be the recommended restaurant in the city centre, a local gastronomic icon. In addition, the area of Las Carmelitas has various good restaurants and options for food less Paraguayan.

Our investigation of cobbled streets encountered new elements here, cobbles with designs and materials different from those encountered hitherto, with some similarities to the streets of Colonia. In our tour we discovered parts of the city with lots of trees.

The time of year and the bicentenary were an advantage for us in our visit. For Christmas the city had various exhibitions of artesania in the streets and plazas, and so we could see traditional forms of weaving, both in mestizo and indigenous forms. We encountered the Paraguayan poncho, unfortunately not finding one in traditional black and white; those available were not particularly attractive. As a result of the bicentenary we found several excellent books on the history of the country, with much evidence of the development of its streets, which are very useful.

This visit to Asunción awoke our curiosity in the country, we left with the awareness that there is more, much more, to see - albeit that it is not fully clear where.

to Asunción / Asunción el destino

Our plan for the day was to see Resistencia, Formasa, and arrive in Asunción. We left later than planned and the rain had stopped, we arrived in Resistencia, which is in essence the same conurbation, on the other side of the river, and thanks to the hour everything was closed, and so our only option was to pass through the streets and sense the ambience: full of sculptures, trees, and tranquil. We don't know how it is after 1700h, when the businesses open and everything fires up again.

We left for Formosa and the temperature started a vertiginous ascent, soon it was necessary to stay inside the car, with air-conditioning on, and seeking to avoid the sun.

Given the hour we decided to forgo Formosa and continue to the border. We crossed the bridge and everything changed. A friendly man gave us instructions on where to park the car and escorted us through the procedures. It became clear that he was seeking some financial benefit. Procedures here, there, and again here, finally all well here, later all well there, and in the end we reached the end of the process. At the car our "guide" suggested that it would be appropriate to offer a "soft drink" (obviously seeking the cost thereof), and so with good humour Alan asked Marce for a Coca Cola from the car and gave this to our friend (without the attached girl in the photo). Everyone happy, and once again on our way.

We advanced 20 Km, passed the next bridge, and arrived in the outskirts of Asunción. 10 Km more and "halt!" a police stop, Colombian car, need to talk...

A distant and serious policeman asked for the car's papers and for our identification. We provided both and then continued a dialogue to the point of being advised that we did not have all of the necessary papers, in the following sequence:

Police: "...but this is not valid in Paraguay, you need a permit to authorise you to bring this vehicle into Paraguay." Us: "OK, here is the authorisation of the Customs to bring the car in."

Police: "...but you cannot drive the car in Paraguay, you have to employ a driver, because this licence is not valid in Paraguay." Us: "No problem because we have our International Driving Permits, please check them."

Police: "...but you need insurance to drive this vehicle in Paraguay." Us: "OK, here is our MERCOSUR insurance certificate."

Police: "...but you don't have a slip from Immigration which indicates the time you are permitted to stay in Paraguay." Us: We have no idea what are requesting, we went through all the formalities, have here the entry stamp showing 90 days validity, however if necessary we will return to the border to request what is missing."

Police: "Oh, please park the car here. Sr. Alan come with me, Sra. stay here."

So Alan had to go with the Policeman to the office alongside. Following the usual greetings came the difficult question of "So what exactly is this country of "The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland" in your passport (the UK passport was necessary for Paraguay)?" So began a lesson in the political and geographical history of the UK, following which the discussion ranged through football, European geography, the Vatican and Italy, and various other subjects. Finally the police tired of the process and directed us as follows: Sr. we have taken up much of your time, if the police stop you again show them your passport with the entry stamp, thank you and all is well.

An hour after our stop we were again on the road. Arrived at the hotel, safe and sound, and then discussed strategies for dealing with any future check, asking ourselves whether it was sensible to visit countries with levels of apparent corruption.

A night in Corrientes / Una noche en corrientes

After 7 hours travel we arrived at Corrientes. As appears to be customary, it rained at the beginning of the journey and for the first driver´s sector it was wet and on narrow roads in construction. In Curuzú Catiá we switched drivers and magically the day brightened and it stopped raining.

As we continued towards Mercedes, the scenery started to change and the wetlands started to show off their treasures: many different herons and other birds alongside the route.

On our entry to Corrientes at the second traffic light, a car alongside us exhibited signs of enthusiasm, lowered its windows and inside were Colombians living in Corrientes celebrating the encounter and giving us recommendations on the city. After 50 seconds the lights changed and inevitably we parted, however the exchange, with horn and lights, wad indispensable.

In our exploratory walk towards the centre we were diverted towards the tourist office by a recommendation of a person in the Casa de Cultura, this change leading to marvellous success, making our evening in Corrientes unforgettable.

We arrived at the tourist office to ask where it would be possible to see Chamamé, a traditional rhythm in the area, whose birthplace is in Corrientes, when we found a live concert in progress on the riverbank alongside; music different from that we had been hearing, it was Chamamé.

The evening was delightful, we listened to the band "La Embajada La Playita" and the singer Gabriela Caballero with songs in Spanish and Guaraní, and this then evolved into a spontaneous performance by all and sundry, singing and dancing Chamamé, Chacareras, telling jokes, orating, and in general enjoying the evening in the traditional manner.

The slow road to Concordia / Ruta lenta y rica hasta concordia

We left for Argentina with the idea of reaching Concordia. Once again the smooth undulations of the countryside welcomed us, until we reached the Cuchilla Grande Inferior (southern great escarpment) where the road climed at an inclination of at least 1 degree(!).

Via the old route 3 we arrived at the Gruta del Palacio (Palace Grotto), a ferrous rocky outcrop which served as a refuge for indigenous peoples, rebels, and foxes. It's a Park protected by the municipality and is surrounded by trees and birds which make the visit enjoyable.

We continued to the border, handled the formalities from the car, and immediately the average speed of the drivers rose markedly, as did the frequency of their unsafe behaviour, once again Argentina road rules.

Given the hour, we decided to sleep in Colón, a decision with great benefits in the following day, albeit that the night was a nightmare of mosquitoes and other demons.

Colón is a river town with most streets unsurfaced, and with large and airy buildings. It is focussed on tourism and receives visitors from the surrounding regions; we found a picturesque hotel and a good restaurant to sate our hunger.

The following day, despite having planned to reach Corrientes, our physical condition and tjhe other drivers on the highway implied with some force that this was not going to happen and so we continued, evaluating things at every turn, and after 168 Km further north stopped for the night.

On the way we visited the Natural Park of the Palms and their spent most of our time. In this park are conserved Palm forests in the savanna ecosystem. This palm occupied most of the region in what are now parts of Argentina, Paraguay, and Brazil, however the palm now survives only in this park and in a few private lands. The park is well signposted with various walking trails and various viewpoints for the sub-ecosystems. We met few people and could enjoy each different environment. The tranquil setting, more fresh than hot, and the birdlife, set a scene in which we could relax and relieve tension.

We arrived in Concordia, saw what there is to see, visited the appropriate art and artesania exhibitions, and so to rest.

Montevideo mix / Entre Condombe, Murgas e Historia

Montevideo is one of those cities which you know exist, however beyond a few fragments you know nothing of its history, and so the fog in our minds acted as a stimulus to learn more.

We arrived via a smooth and rapid route, entered the city with almost no effort, and reached the hotel with little more, and so once again Uruguay's tranquillity welcomed us.

We visited the Torres Garcia and Gurvich museums which gave us insight into "Constructive Universalism", with which concept our minds made hay. The first presenting the work and fundamentals of the Torres Garcia school, he being the principal exponent of the genus in Uruguay. While the works displayed did not provoke strong emotions, the fundamental principles were attractive. The second presents the work of Gurvich, whose ceramics are surprising and delicious to see; while he was a disciple of Torres Garcia, it is evident that he enriched the style considerably.

In our wandering around the old city, we visited the Carnaval Museum. This describes the tradition and presents the elements of the Carnaval; it's diverting, well curated, and facilitates understanding. With respect to the Murgas (see Rosario's post) these are musical representations of theatre, which reflect aspects of local life. What do you think of the hat in the photo?

We visited the Pre-Colombian and Indigenous Art Museum, with a small collection of the art of various central- and south-american cultures, with total absence of the indigenous people who lived in the area now occupied by Uruguay and who are now extinct, it appears that their extinction merits no record.

In the Automobile Museum we encountered a small but excellent collection of old vehicles, all in running order and in good condition, a small pleasure.

The Municipal Centre of Photography was a great success. The city has a digitalised archive of photographs with a high level of information, classification, and accessibility. We reviewed the entire collection, and after several hours of work, conversation, and procedures we were able to obtain digital copies of important photos for our studies.

To extend our understanding of Uruguayan music and dance we attended a "Dinner Show" and enjoyed the treat. We heard and saw Candombe, Milongas, Tangos, Tambores, and other folkloric dance, with a high level of performance of the musicians, singers, and dancers.

Montevideo is a delightful city, its temperature invites one to seek refreshing locales to drink coffee. Its streets are full of trees and people selling antiquities and artesania, the latter being of a higher quality than we have found in other cities. Its beaches are enjoyed by people bating in the waters of the River Plate. The buildings retain traditional architecture appropriate to the climate. The city also offers the elements indispensable to modern cities. We also visited an enchanting bookstore, with antique books and first editions from floor to ceiling... a wonderful place easy to enjoy.

Now in English: In the land of the Uruguayans / En las tierra Uruguayas...

We started the day appreciating the wetlands of the Paraná, miles and miles of grass, lagoons, rivers, and other open water, tempting us to dally longer, however we limited our appreciation to the vistas accessible from the road, appreciating the birdlife to the extent possible.

Then, passing through rainshowers, we arrived at the border, an integrated post with Uruguay, where the procedures are handled on the east side of the bridge. We discovered that the official name of Uruguay is the Eastern Republic of Uruguay, and so started the next chapter.

First stop Mercedes, a tranquil and harmonious place, clean and with good road infrastructure, a few cobbled streets and well conserved buildings. There is an esplanade which allows enjoyment of the river.

We explored Villa Soriano, the road to which is rich in birdlife, many flocks of dove on the road, ready to take flight on the approach of the car, many other birds visible, tempting us to stop at every opportunity. The village is small, full of trees, with various old buildings including the church which allowed us to see the architecture of the village, streets of asphalt and sand, with not much to do on a Sunday afternoon.

Carmelo, a place on the banks of the river, with an attractive harbour and cobbled streets and sidewalks lined with trees setting a refreshing scene.

Destination at the end of day, Colonia del Sacramento, a delicious place. THis historic site was occupied by Portuguese, British, and Spanish and changed hands 14 times. The old city retains Portuguese amd Spanish construction techniques in its buildings; the streets are a mystery and although many were cobbled in the early 20th century, many have been cobbled during recent restoration.

The old city today is an invitation to stroll, let ones senses delight in the general ambience and in the details which make a difference. The leaves of the trees whisper in the breeze and the fresh air is a caress.

We spent a day between the museums and the Regional Historic Archive: the former offering more than their exhibits in the opportunity to see the construction of the old buildings in which they are housed; in the latter we spent some time with Erica reviewing the photographic material archived, in which we discovered more information valuable for our studies, photographs and reference texts.

Besos a todos y todas

PD.

PS. One of the major differences which we found was the calmness of Uruguayan drivers, all respecting the speed limits. Travelling the route at no more than 90 Km/h was frankly a slow experience. It was also surprising to see the number of old vehicles on the roads and in the streets.

Thursday 16 December 2010

Now in English: Here comes the sun...

After many days not "on the road", we took the wheel again to head northwards for the northeast of Argentina and Uruguay. The plan was to head for Victoria and then for Mercedes, Uruguay, the following day. Our expectation: leave the city, take an open road, enjoy the scenery and the morning sun, arriving in Victoria after 5 hours travel, with a stop in Rosario to explore. The pre-trip checks took more time than planned, we needed to do a full check and also "reload" luggage. The atmosphere in the garage was heavy however our desire to continue was sufficient inspiration to get going.

Now at the wheel we ascended the ramp from the garage and the beautiful flowering trees of the plaza lightened the atmosphere, everything appeared to support the plan. After a few minutes drops of rain appeared on the windshield; how pleasant to have a refreshing shower cool the day. Our initial lightness of reaction to the shower was washed away during a three hour downpour as we headed north: dreadful visibility, trucks on all sides, nowhere to stop safely. When we saw the next YPF we changed drivers, whereupon the sun came out and an hour later we were in Rosario. We decided to stay there; enjoying the scenery having been impossible, the idea was now to explore the city.

Leaving the hotel we recognised the signs of a river city: appropriate clothes, tree-lined streets, evidence of dampness in the walls, and the slow pace of people in the streets, resulting from the mixture of the impact of the sun and the dampness of the body which slowly invades all parts. We viewed the official icons of the city, and passed on to the Rambla, a place with various curiosities:

Urban fishing, in two forms: one being that in which citizens arrive in their cars laden with paraphernalia to relax by the river, drink mate, and enjoy the day, while the fish undertake their task of swallowing the bait; the second being that in which young men with limited resources apply their talent to the capture of fish by any means, including their exposure to the hazards below the concrete structure to recover fish.

Afternoon sports: many people exercising, walking, running, or otherwise enjoying the facilities of the area, including kids on bikes showing off their acrobatic capabilities.

Railway stories: the esplanade is built on the old railway and uses its infrastructure to house various organisations and activities. The buildings are conserved more or less originally and it's possible to appreciate their construction. There are cafes, markets, restaurants, and other cultural expressions.

The Island of Invention: a perfect place! A space dedicated to the human word and action. A place of creation and recreation, freeing the spirit. A place to visit, to spend time, and care for the soul.

The "Murga": in the evening we encountered this spectacle, a Uruguyan "Musical Theatre", focussed on Rosario and its culture, interpreted via the group "La Cotorra". As well as being entertaining, it was the perfect hors d'oeuvre for our entry to Uruguay the following day.

Buenos Aires: a diversion / una diversión

We arrived in Buenos Aires and settled in easily; a welcome arrival at the Plaza. While our arrival in Tierra del Fuego marked the southernmost extent of our trip, Buenos Aires was also a milestone, being more or less the halfway point in the trip, and also a place where we expected to spend more time than in other cities, to meet friends, enjoy the city’s museums and attractions, and also to handle administrative necessities.

We visited Puerto Madero several times, including three visits in all to Cabaña las Lilas, where the steak remains excellent, and the service very good.

MALBA was worth the visit, despite the fact that one level was closed for a new exhibition due to open that evening. The National History Museum was less than impressive; were it called the “Museum of pictures of a few important people” it would be better described. The temporary exhibition on “memories” was quite good, however our expectations of the National History Museum were much higher than were realized.

We enjoyed walking much of the city, including Caminito, which has become more touristy recently, San Telmo, where the street market has expanded and the area is full of life on a Sunday, and from Palermo back to Plaza San Martin via Recoleta.

For our mandatory visit to a Tango Show we chose El Querandí, however this has become more of a tourist spectacle now.

One day we went to see the Polo. This year is the 117th open championship, and we were able to see Pilará Piaget v. São José on field #2, where we quickly appreciated the more obvious aspects of the game. We then saw La Dolfina v. Chapa Uno on field #1, a battle of contenders for the championship. The combination of rider and horse(s) controlling the ball at speed, or jostling for possession, is highly impressive. Obviously after two games we considered ourselves experts…

One day out of Buenos Aires was spent visiting San Antonio de Areco, described as the centre of the gaucho world, where the Museo Gaucho proved enjoyable. We found a number of shops selling artesania of a higher standard, including exquisite ponchos and pampa weaving.

One night we attended a Joan Manuel Serrat concert, where Marce was ecstatic and I gained an appreciation of this artist, whose interpretations of Miguel Hernandez poetry along with his own compositions are wonderful.

While in the city we took a flying visit home to take care of some administrative tasks and also catch up with family and friends, unfortunately being unable to achieve all that we planned owing to appalling weather.

All in all we enjoyed our stay in the city, where we were able to wander through bookstores, enjoy good coffee, meet friends, and enjoy a good break.
