Litoral Nordeste 2 /The northeast coast 2

Continuando hacia el norte, avanzamos hacia Joao Pessoa, capital del Estado de Paraíba. Utilizamos la ruta del litoral y comprendimos que en este lugar estaríamos en el punto más este de nuestro viaje y de la América Continental. Así que nos permitimos visitar las playas para descubrir el goce de la gente de la región en las mismas, sobre el mar o sobre el río, las playas están llenas de visitantes, buses grantes y carros particulares ocupan las calles de las pequeñas villas y todos están cerca del agua, con algo de comer y una Skol en la mano (Alan cada vez más sorprendido con la penetración de Skol en el mundo brasilero).

Continuing northward, we we arrived at João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba state. We travelled via the coast road and would pass the most easterly point in our trip and on the mainland Americas. On the way we were able to visit beaches and see how the local people enjoy themselves, both in the sea and the river; the beaches were full of visitors, big buses and private cars filling the streets of small villages and everyone near the water, with something to eat and a Skol in hand (Alan surprised at the extent of market penetration of Skol in the Brazilan World).

Al llegar al lugar encontramos el centro de ciencia, cultura y arte del lugar, unas instalaciones amplias con diferentes galerías para exhibiciones de arte, planetario inflable y el camino de conocimiento. Luego de pasar un rato allí y disfrutar todas las atracciones llegamos al Hotel y nuevamente una playa extensa y generosa se puso a nuestro servicio.

On arriving in the city we encountered the local Centre of Science, Culture, and Art, with extensive facilities including galleries for art exhibitions, an inflatable planetarium, and a “knowledge trail”. After spending some time there and enjoying all of the attractions we arrived at the hotel and once again found a long and wide beach at our disposal.

Al día siguiente vivimos nuestra experiencia de turismo Express, Contábamos con 2 horas para conocer el centro histórico de la ciudad, la cercanía del carnaval nos obligó a hacer reservas en cada sitio para asegurar nuestro alojamiento, así que no teníamos opción más que correr. Así cogimos el taxi recomendado y creamos el tour: “historia en un minuto”, seguido por el tour: “mierda, ese fuerte queda muy lejos”. Si bien en el mapa el Fuerte de Santa Catalina queda en el extremo de la bahia, realmente queda a 28 Km. de la ciudad en un municipio adyacente, nuestro tiempo terminó en 3 horas de paseo que luego nos obligó a manejar intensamente hacia Natal, incluyendo hamburguesa de microondas en el carro.

In the morning we undertook some high speed tourism. We had two hours to investigate the historic centre of the city; the imminence of Carnaval required that we make reservations where possible and we had no option but to stick to the schedule. So, we took the recommended taxi and set off on our tour “History in a Minute”, followed by the tour “Shit, this fortress is a long way”. While on the “schematic tourist map” the Fortress of Santa Catalina appears in the corner, in fact it is 28 Km from the city in the next municipality. Our tours took 3 hours and so we need to drive single-mindedly towards Natal, including reducing our lunch to micro-waved hamburgers in the car.

En Natal, encontramos una ciudad moderna y organizada. En el centro de la ciudad, existe una reserva natural de dunas que hacen el paisaje muy circular. La zona de Ponta Negra, esta llena de posadas y hoteles completamente llenos de cara a la Playa. Llegamos al hotel, donde el parqueadero privado, era realmente privado de toda seguridad y nos toco iniciar la búsqueda de una alternativa para un carro lleno, así terminamos en un Hotel Turismo, con parqueadero Privado e instalaciones básicas, cuya piscina solo se abre hasta la 6 de la tarde, porque de noche nadie se quiere refrescar.

In Natal we found a modern, well-organised city. In the centre there is a Dune Nature Reserve, which makes all routes circuitous. The zone of Ponta Negra is full of beachfront pousadas and hotels. We arrived at the hotel, where the “hotel free parking” turned out to be free of all security (i.e. on the street), forcing us to seek an alternative for our car and its contents, hence arriving at the Tourism Hotel, with secure parking, basic facilities, and a pool open only until 1800h, on the assumption, presumably, that no one would be interested in a refreshing swim in the evening.

Al día siguiente viajamos a Fortaleza, en el camino fue evidente el cambio del paisaje, más seco, más severo, más complejo: la caatinga y con ella apareció en nuestra vida el Vaqueiro. Recorriendo la ciudad, llegamos al centro cultural Dragao do Mar y este personaje se clarificó, junto con su importancia histórica, sus prácticas desde tiempos coloniales y las transformaciones que han tenido que enfrentar producto de los cambios en la forma de producción y tenencia de la tierra.

The following day we headed for Fortaleza. En route a change in scenery was evident: drier, harsher, more complex – the caatinga. We began to appreciate the life of the “vaqueiro” (Brazilian cowboy). Touring the city we found the Dragão do Mar centre and gained an appreciation of this character, his historical importance, culture since colonial times, and the changes which he has had to confront in production methods and land use. We also enjoyed various temporary exhibitions here.

Fortaleza, como las demás capitales de los estados Brasileros extensa y llena de gente y edificaciones. Atravesamos la Ciudad y finalmente en el Hotel, mas fácil de lo imaginado. Utilizamos el resto de la noche caminando por la vía para peatones a lo largo de la playa haciéndonos una idea del lugar.

Fortaleza, like other state capitals, extensive and full of people and buildings. We crossed the city and arrived at the hotel, more easily than expected. We spent the rest of the evening walking the beachfront with other pedestrians, gaining an idea of the city.

Dedicamos el día siguiente a recorrer la zona histórica, además de divertirnos con varias exhibiciones temporales, dedicamos mucho de nuestro recorrido a explorar el mercado y sus zonas aledañas, posteriormente visitamos el Museo de la Ciudad donde pudimos comprender otros elementos del desarrollo de esta población. Es evidente el esfuerzo de la ciudad por recuperar la zona histórica para hacerla habitable y segura, aún el trabajo no termina, muchas edificaciones se encuentran en proceso de recuperación y aunque el entorno es propicio no es fácil encontrar donde comer, así que como en nuestro caso lo mejor puede ser comerse un rico sorvete.

We spent the following day touring the historic centre, in addition to enjoying various temporary exhibitions, we occupied a lot of time in the market and its environs, subsequently visiting the City Museum where we gained further appreciation of the development of the people in the area. It is evident that the city is seeking to renovate the historic centre to provide an area habitable and safe, which effort is still underway, hence although the area is inviting it was difficult to find anywhere to eat, so that in our case we restricted ourselves to enjoying a tasty ice-cream.
