Salvador (now in English too)

So now we talk of Salvador, which is a peculiar place. The rich and the difficult coexist (as everywhere) however the intensity of the place is clearly different.

There we met the most helpful and friendly Argentine we have met in our trip: Jorge, totally invaded by the Brazilian culture, and his wife María Claudia, who transformed another day of work into a pleasure. We met them through Jorge’s interest in helping a lady seeking to communicate with an employee of Nissan, each in her/his own language, and spent practically the entire afternoon in his company. After helping us acquire tickets to Psirico, he guided us to the worshop where we had been given to understand that they had the tyres we needed, but which required passing through the centre of the city. En route we stopped to meet his wife and enjoy her company. Their presence helped us to handle the challenges of the day and make progress. It should be noted that transiting the city centre offers its challenges; the level of crack consumption and street violence is evident and one must maintain a high level of vigilance, the safe zones to transit, and the hours within one must limit one’s passage, are clearly understood by those living in the city.

In Salvador the social contrast shared by all big cities exists: those with Money are visible, through their cars and houses, those with limited incomes living in tiny insecure homes, and with far fewer opportunities. This coexistence in some cases with smiles and in others with more tension.

Religion and spirituality are an important theme in the identity of the Soteropolitanos, the Candomblé, Spiritism, and other forms of religion coexist with catholicism; practicesestablished in the syncretism of the colonial era continuing visible in the day to day. Symbols are live, beliefs are strong, and manifestations manifold.

Salvador opened our eyes (and ears) to various musical forms which are strong in Bahía and which have flooded all of Brazil: Axé, Forro, Pagode, which coexist with Samba and other “MPB”. This musical variety is reflected strongly in Carnaval, and perhaps all years in preparation for Carnaval. There were many “practice sessions” going on for the Carnaval “blocos”, highly popular and every night of the week. After one of our intense workdays we went to see Psirico with their invited guests, Bell, and Daniela Mercury. After three hours at the venue, one in line, and two listening to the early “invitees” we finally left after hearing none of the announced artists. Seeing the crowd arrive slowly, fill the arena, and respond with enthusiasm to the early (not very good) warm up act proved to be the best entertainment.

As in all of Brazil the racial mix is evident and “mestizaje” inevitable; however in Salvador the African roots are evident. There is a prevalent pride in the black African history, inevitably for those living there this source of pride is appropriated. In the food, dance, music, and urban art are manifest a great respect for history and a pride in the heritage.

The city conserves architectural jewels, and as is hence inevitable one loses oneself in the streets. The city centre contrasts restored with delapidated buildings, however it is always possible to find a beautiful house, an interesting facade, a construction of attractive stone, or a good example of modernity. In the rest of the city the attractive and the ugly coexist.

Finally, the beach plays a leading role, those nearest the centre full of people who use their weekends to enjoy the sand, the sun, and the sea; a small area in which to set the beach chair and the sunshade are sufficient. The beaches to the north are extensive and the attraction stronger, resulting in hypnotised crowds heading out of the city.

We continued on our way north, where the beach is at the centre of everything.
