After a night noticeably different to the senses, we came to life just before 1000h, the “pumpkin hour” for both breakfast and laundry, with the result that our awaking turned into a race to achieve both objectives.
Salimos a conocer la ciudad, habíamos planeado dos noches allí antes de continuar hacia el norte y el tiempo era poco. Ese día la visita de “la Dilma” como le dicen lo chicos, ocupaba la ciudad y el trafico estaba un poco más caótico de lo normal. Así que fuimos al teatro amazonas a observar el movimiento de las masas alrededor de la nueva presidenta. La plaza estaba llena y las fuerzas de seguridad presentes estableciendo diferentes barreras y lo suficientemente obvias como para que los observadores comprendan los siguientes movimientos. Su presencia fue aclamada con la misma sutileza con que ella como presidenta se relaciona con las masas, no hubo protestas, todas manifestaciones suaves de soporte.
We set out to explore the city, we had planned two nights before heading further north and our time was limited. This day “La Dilma” (as the kids call her) was visiting, and so the city traffic was a little more chaotic than usual. We went to the Amazon Theatre and were able to see the reactions of the masses to their new President. The security forces were present in volume, and their various barriers made clear the probable routing of the presidencial group. Her arrival was greeted with the same subtlety as her presidencial style, with no protests, only low key demonstrations of support.
Superado el espectáculo, posible recorrer el teatro, observar los detalles de la construcción, y las historias de un sociedad que en su momento deliraba con ser tan “Civilizada” como Europa, con todas sus aberraciones potenciadas con la fiebre del caucho. El teatro se conserva vivo, posee una temporada de Opera en Abril y mantiene espectáculos todo el año, lastimosamente ninguno en los días de nuestra estadía.
Once the spectacle was over, it was possible to tour the theatre, see how it was built, and learn something of the dynamics of the era in which the dream was to be “civilised” like Europe, with all of the aberrations resulting from a boom, in this case the Rubber Boom. The Theatre remains alive, with an opera season in April and performances all year, unfortunately none of these being on a day when we would be in town.
En la ciudad varias construcciones del siglo XIX se han restaurado y se encuentran convertidas en centros culturales al servicio de la población, todos gratuitos, con diversas colecciones o sirviendo de escenario para museos relativos a la ciudad. En el Palacio de Justicia un hermosa exposición de escultura, en el Palacete Provincial la Pinacoteca, el museo de arqueología, el museo de numismática y el museo de fotografía y sonido. En el Palacio de Río Negro y otras casas privadas exhibiciones de época y de pertenencias de personajes de la región. Así entre un espacio y otro se va el tiempo, se recrea la historia y se construye un sentido muy positivo de ciudad.
In the city various 19th century buildings have been restored and turned into cultural centres for the population, all free, with various collections and city museum exhibitions. In the Palace of Justice there is a beautiful sculpture exhibition, in the Provincial “Palacete” an art museum, archaeological museum, numismatic museum, and museum of photography and sound. In the Rio Negro Palace and other private houses there are exhibitions of the “Rubber Era” and pf the possesions of famous (or important) people of the region. Hence between one site and another it was possible to recreate history and gain a very positive sense of the city.
Para aprovechar el entorno visitamos dos de las tres atracciones naturales del lugar: el Parque Mingu y el Jardín botánico. El primero aunque bosque secundario fue perfecto para apreciar tres ecosistemas diferentes y comprender las particularidades de la vegetación, esto no habría sido posible sin los dos guías del parque que se ofrecieron a acompañarnos y nos explicaron las diferencias y características de cada caso. Allí también vimos la degradación del ambiente producto de la contaminación física y química del Río. Un buen lugar para aprender.
To appreciate the setting we visited two of the three main natural attractions of the city: the Mingo Park and the Botanic Garden. The first, while being secondary forest, was perfect to understand three different ecosystems and the peculiarities of their vegetation, which would not have been possible without the services of two guides who volunteered to accompany us and explain the characteristics of each. We also noted the degradation of the environment resulting from the physical and chemical polution of the river valley – a good place to learn.
El Jardín Botánico merecerá de nuestra parte otra visita, no llegamos con suficiente tiempo para recorrerlo en su esplendor, pero pudimos apreciar la colección del Museo de la Amazonía y algo de la riqueza del lugar: Bosque Primario.
The Botanic Garden merits another visit, from our perspective; we did not arrive with sufficient time to take full advantage of its splendour, however we were able to appreciate the Museum of Amazonia, and something of the richness of the Primary Forest environment.
Desde el punto de vista gastronómico la cocina del Lugar nos sedujo al menos en dos sitios donde los sabores locales tienen cabida. De un lado descubrimos una sopa llamada Tacacá: un caldo de Tucumí, con Jambú, goma de mandioca y camarones, servida en calabaza teñida. Se toma a sorbos y con la ayuda de un palito para administra el contenido. El sabor es extraño y delicioso, picante, caliente y exuberante. Tuvimos la suerte de probarla cuando el Kiosco patrocinaba un concierto de un músico local, disfrutamos el sabor, la música y el ambiente general de goce y alegría.
From the gastronomic point of view, the regional cuisine seduced us, at least in two locales where local ingredients were given space. On one hand we discovered a soup called Tacacá: a broth of Tucumí, with Bambú, manioc paste, and prawns, served in a fired calabash, and eaten (drunk?) from the calabash, with a wooden skewer to handle the solids. The flavour is unusual and delicious, piquant, hot, and exuberant. We were fortunate to try this when the kiosk was hosting a live concert of local music; we enjoyed the flavours, the music, and the general atmosphere of jollity.
En Banzairo, comimos costillas de Tambaqui, imaginen el tamaño del animal para que sea posible servir piezas de 3 costillas y sentirte como los picapiedras. También Pirarucú ahumado en otra salsa regional. Estos platos muy útiles para satisfacer algunos de los placeres de la boca.
In Banzeiro we ate Tambaqui ribs, imagining the size of a fish from which one can consume three ribs and feel sated. Also we ate smoked Pirarucú with another regional sauce. These dishes were very useful in satisfying certain oral pleasures.
El tiempo en Manaus nos permitió comprender los retos de la siguiente ruta y también aceptar que el tiempo en nuestro plan era insuficiente, serían necesarios tres días para llegar a Boa Vista.
Our time in Manaus allowed us to understand the challenges of the next part of our trip and realise that the time planned for the journey to Boa Vista was insufficient, such that we really needed three days for this.
