Lucho and his circus….

After finding out that the customs office closes on Sundays and that we would therefore have to wait until Monday to cross the border we decided to go to San Cristobal and get to know this area, in addition taking the opportunity to get to know the cousins whom we knew only through aunts’ stories.

Entonces perfecto!"

The aunts recommended that we stay at Lucho’s, an idea which we found impossible, given that we had never seen him or his family, and so thought that it would be best to find a hotel in the city and then make contact. However, thanks to the limitations of the gasoline distribution system and the need to confirm vague information on the availability of gasoline, we called Lucho and everything changed: we were awaited at his home, lunch was prepared for us and we would sleep there, so that the only thing we could say was “yes, sir!”, followed by “my love, we will be staying at Lucho’s”, Alan’s reply “Oh, OK, perfect!”.

We continued on our way, confirming what we head heard from various sources; the roads were terrible, not only in terms of the damage to the surface which was frequent, but also since the rains had washed out the road in many places, and the indication of the loss of the roadway was abysmal in every case. In various places the loss of the roadway was hair-raising, and it was necessary to be very cautious.

We arrived in San Cristobal and Lucho met us to lead us to his house. After a fraternal embrace we had the sensation of having know him forever, followed him home, getting to know all of the members of the family amid the Mother’s Day celebrations, some enthusiastic like Lucho, others more dotty, however all enchanting. We saw Amalia and enjoyed her happy and cogent conversation.

As the shindig continued, we moved on the the home of Elide and Humberto, enjoying the company of both and also the highly amusing singing of “Happy Birthday” in an unconventional multivocal manner. Later we spent some time at Amalia’s home, and between the present and her memories of the past got to know her life.

Back at Lucho’s we continued talking with Lucho, the “Luchitos” (Luis’s), Janeth, and Andrea, telling stories back and forth, looking at photos, and then tiredness overtook us, we had agreed to get up early to visit the Botanic Garden early in the morning to see birds.

During breakfast Janeth passed on her worry that we might not find any birds at the Garden; undaunted we continued with the plan, the worst that could happen was that we would enjoy the garden itself; if there were birds, fine; if not, equally fine. When we arrived the air was full of birdsong, the place was full of birds, and we enjoyed ourselves to satiety, with the birds and with Janeth’s surprise at every turn. Thank you for taking us, and spending your time with us.

After watching the birds, and successfully filling the car with gas (after a 25 minute wait in line), we set off to visit two colonial villages: San Pedro del Rio and Peribeca. Both places were tranquil, they fill at weekends, however we were able to take good photographs since it was Monday. Their cobbled streets, colonial buildings, and pretty plazas made the visits a pleasure. Returning to San Cristobal the main highway was closed, however a friendly “Venezuelan compatriot” guided us via an alternative route to the city. Once again in the gas line, after a 25 minute wait, we filled up again.

Once again family conversations filled the evening, moving on the discussion of our plans for the immediate future. After this time together, keeping our relationship alive will be a pleasure, all are welcome at our home, and we will seek to return to San Cristobal soon.

Besos,

Alan y Marce

Mérida: The spell of the mountains / El encanto de la Montaña

After various days hearing positive comments about Mérida we were well-disposed towards our encounter. The route we took, while conservative, proved to be the best option for approaching the city: we took the Pan-American (Route 1) to Vigía (on the way to which we enjoyed well-publicised local delicacies) and then ascended via the "Tunnels" to the city. From the moment of arrival the cordiality of the city's people was clear.

The Posada Casa Sol, near the historic centre of the city, proved to be a good choice: a mix of posada, art gallery, and cultural centre. We met Jorge, with whom we went birdwatching on various occasions, and whose knowledge and perspective on Venezuela proved to be most valuable. We went to the Botanic Garden with him and also went out on an excellent trip through the mountains to the west on the road to Azulita. The scenery was wonderful and we enjoyed encountering diverse birds on the trip.

On this day we visited La Bravera, a country posada which is absolutely beautiful, meeting Jorge Bravo, we explored a walk up the mountain above the posada through the cloud forest to the páramo above, and also enjoyed the many species of hummingbirds at the posada, as well as a tasty lunch. A place to visit again, an elegy to nature and beauty, showing the link possible between man and nature when respect is present.

Curious about the attractions of the cordillera, we went northeast to reach the Pass of Pico del Aguila, the highest point reachable on the road to Trujillo. The main challenge of the trip was the state of the roads; when the Venezuelan driving style is applied to steep narrow tortuous roads with multiple landslides and associated missing road , the spectacle is impressive. We spent a lot of time waiting to pass landslides, where the traffic jams, in limited spaces, demonstrated clearly the limitations of the drivers' minds in terms of spatial reasoning. APart form this, we enjoyed the beauty of the páramo and its vegetation, and the peaches in syrup which we were able to find for lunch. The view from the pass itself was limited by the cloud.

Now for the city: the historic centre, while small, includes several houses well worth the visit. They have been restored with appreciation of the original architectural characteristics, and now form part of the cultural life of the city.

The cultural offer in Mérida is superior to that encountered in other cities in the country. We enjoyed the museums, and the capacity of those involved in them to captivate the visitor with their amiability and knowledge. We were able to attend a concert by the Symphonic Orchestra, which in addition to being of a high standard, allowed us to hear the works of six contemporary composers of the city... it was surprising to us to find that five of the six were present at the concert. We also learned a lot about the history of the city, through the enthusiastic explanations of the Director of the Academy of Mérida.

This was thus an excellent visit, in which we enjoyed so much, however were left with insufficient time to appreciate the local photographic exhibition, or to explore the photographic archive. However, the advantage of Mérida is that it is sufficiently close to Colombia to allow another visit without much difficulty.

Having confirmed the pathetic state of the road between Coro and Barquisimeto and hearing various stories on the challenges of this route, we decided to travel to Carora, our next destination, via the main highways, which would also allow us to enjoy the vistas of the Falcon peninsula from the sierra while descending to Coro.

Hence we took the main highway to Maracaibo, through 3 hours of dry scenery, where before crossing the bridge we turned south on route 17, returning towards the centre of the country through greener scenery, more traffic, more trucks, and more potholes, before arriving at our destination.

We headed for the historic district, which gave us a positive feeling, and we then looked for a place to stay in the area. When we came across the "Rincón del Bogavante" we supposed that this challenge had been resolved and we could dedicate ourselves to getting to know this area. We walked back into the centre, found everything closed, discovered that there remain a few conserved structures, with facades which give a "colonial" feel to the centre, however there was no way to learn much about them since it seems that after 1700h everyone has gone to bed, and there is nothing to do, eat, or learn.

Given that there was nowhere to eat in the district we took the remains of a taxi to "Pollos el Morocho" to eat the appropriate chicken, after which another ruin, this time lacking windows in all of its doors, took us back to the hotel to enjoy the delights of the room we had taken.

The "Rincón del Bogavante" is a curious place, with accessories glued to the bedside tables, the remains of a sofa, a showere with two separate shower heads but no hot water, green lights on the floor which did not work, and a bathroom which floods when used. The bed with its mosquito net to simulate silk curtains and canopy was frankly exceptional, when you take into account that all of the various "quasi-antique" fittings mean that your feet stick out of the bed when asleep.

The following day we went, or more accurately fled, towards Mérida, with the hope of finding something better, and with little persuasion elected not to visit the local vineyards before leaving the area.

Besos a todos,

Alan y Marce

A circuit of Falcón / Una vuelta por Falcón

We continued on our way from Morrocoy, taking heed of the recommendations of the Three A's, hence once onto the highway to Valencia we headed fro our first stop in Puerto Cabello, avoiding trucks and potholes on the way.

Puerto Cabello was the first sea port of Venezuela, and is mainly a commercial town, with a small historic centre which has been renovated and includes a tourist information office. The facades of a few buildings have been conserved adequately, others are "quasi-colonial", many are in process of restoration, and others, while undoubtedly picturesque, owe their origins to a more recent period. A grreat advantage of the town is that it has a Post Office which is open, has stamps, and knows how many are required for postcards, and so we were finally able to post the postcards accumulated to date.

We then continued to Morrocoy and after passing the refineries and enjoying their malodorous atmosphere we arrived in an environment of palms and full of businesses ready to offer the services most appreciated by local tourists: barbecue and beer. In Tucacas the high-rise buildings occupy the entire seafront, such that the beach cannot be seen for concrete.

Finally we entered the Morrocoy Nastional Park via a narrow semi-surfaced road, between the mangroves and the woods. Soon we were tempted to stop to see crabs, scarlet ibis, and herons. We stayed at La Esmeralda, which was perfect for our visit: access to the sea and good food. Sunset was ideal for seeing birds in flight, the ibis, flamingoes, parrots, and herons returning home for the night, in the silence of the dock, accompanied only by "the plague" enjoying its evening meal.

We took a small boat and set off to explore the islands; clear water abounds and it is easy to appreciate the natural habitat. After visiting several noisy, tourist-filled islands, we disembarked at a deserted and tranquil beach. While this did not fulfil Marce's pre-established hopes for the setting for a day of relaxation (which was somewhat disappointing) it proved perfect. We establsihed ourselves below a palm tree and after spending some time in observation of the local fauna we took up our book with the intention of finishing it. Soon after a boat arrived, leading us to think "shit, more people", however the boat turned out to be a mobile marine cafe, which tours the islands offering food, hence we enjoyed some local fare, which while relatively costly was most convenient.

Soon afterwasrds another boat arrived: small girl, chairs, cooler, and other conveniences, cheerful greetings from everyone to everyone else. Surprisingly the lady approached us offering a plate of the food they had brought for the day, we thanked them and appreciative of their gesture, joined them to eat. In this manner we encountered Manuel and Reina, and their family: friendly and sympathetic Venezuelans, curious about our activities, and very affectionate. We appreciated once again the friendly and open nature of the Venezuelans, filling our experience with colour.

Our next "Falconian" destination was Coro. Here we found a conserved historic centre, with cobbled streets and well-preserved churches. We were unable to visit any of the museums, for various different reasons for their closure, and we enjoyed the distinctive experience of staying in a Training Hotel, where we passed an acceptable night, with evidence of the hotel's status as a school.

We visited the Paraguaná peninsula, the northernmost part of the South American mainland: initially visiting the Medanos (sand dunes) of the isthmus which impressed us with their beauty and extent; then to the "Centre of the Universe" according to the inhabitants of the village; finally arriving at Tiraya Lake, where we saw flamingoes and the huge deposit of garbage accumulated around the local village.

Next stop: the Sierra de San Luis. We stayed at the Finca El Monte, ideally situated to enjoy the rich environment of the area. We walked a sector of the Camino Real de los Españoles, from Acarite to Caburé, four hours of humid forest and cobbled path. Then the falls of Hueque, the village of San Luis, and the Haitón of Guarataro.

At the Finca we enjoyed the spontaneous and genial company of Rafael (in the photo), and the attention of Dominic and Virginie. This is good place to enjoy life.

We left Falcón travelling west, happy and without much more to say.

Besos,

Alan y Marce

The route of contrasts / La ruta de los contrastes

We left Puerto la Cruz for Colonia Tovar, with the firm intention to avoid Caracas, its traffic and insecurity being attributes with limited interest for us.

We set off after rush hour, however this did not prevent us from witnessing 40 minutes of crazy, ridiculous, and bizzare behaviour on the part of the city’s drivers. Finally on the highway the scenery was dominated by industrial installations constrasting with beautiful Araguaney trees in flower covering the hills along the way. In the populated zones the commercial roadside offer was mainly sweets and yucca bread.

Upon entering the state of Miranda the roadside filled with fruit stands and tall trees on either side of the road; in addition we noted a significant change in road condition, whereas the road had been maintained (to some extent), it was now showing the impact of winter, with collapsed shoulders and many potholes, some deep, requiring constant attention.

When we arrived at Caucagua, the main highway turned north, however we headed south to Santa Teresa de Tuy and connected with a highway which passes south of the Caracas area and continues to Valencia, four lanes in good condition. Wide bridges contrasted with those in the previous section of road, which while enjoying attractive scenery, is narrow and stressful as a result of the habits of the drivers. When we approached the next junction a notice directed us to the left hand lane; we passed under a bridge and were then amazed to see a car heading towards us in the right hand lane of the divided highway, then turning and crossing the other three lanes to leave the highway to our left. We couldn’t believe it. We continued 200m to find ourselves facing a line of contradictory painted markings on the road, then a small hand-painted sign telling us to turn left, where we found the main bridge closed, and signs (“road temporarily in contra-flow”) indicating that we should return on the “wrong” side of the road we had taken, and it appeared that we then had to cross to the other side of the highway to leave it by an entry lane in the opposite direction (as the other car had just done). We took this route with some trepidation, particularly when we had to take the entry lane in the wrong direction, fearing that we would encounter vehicles head-on entering the highway, consistent with the purpose of this single lane, however this lane was the only way to approach the bridge we needed to cross, with no signs, no separation barriers, and no indication that this was safe. We were blocking the path of a large truck, and moved aside to let it pass. The driver stopped and asked us where we were going, then cheerily told us that this was indeed the way we had to go and to follow him, this giving us some sense of protection as we exited by the entry lane and finally arrived on route 12, somewhat un-nerved but happy to change pace.

We started to ascend the sierra, which we subsequently discovered was the Guatapo national park. The road was steep and with frequent loss of shoulder through landslide, however the scenery was beautiful, the forest luxuriant and attractive. Once at the crest we turned right and after a basic regional lunch, “Hallaca de chicharrón” and “meat empanada”, we started downhill through the same beauty until we arrived at the Santa Teresa open garbage dump, via a twisting two-lane road. We then reached the main Caracas-Valencia highway, in perfect state, four lanes with hard shoulders, and traffic more or less orderly. We took this, with some surprise at the conditions, as far as La Victoria, where we left for a different route.

The route to Colonia Tovar is narrow, with desolate scenery for most of the ascent, steep and tortuous; we climbed from 400m to 1200m in 20 Km and were then surprised by German architecture, German names, vegetables, fruit, and a beautiful cloud forest environment with tall palms; then an abrupt descent into the heart of Colonia Tovar.

The place is picturesque and pleasant, its steep streets full of stores, mostly day-to-day necessities, a few with tourist focus, with well-made wooden signs, some of which are almost works of art. At 1830h all is quiet, most of the stores have closed, only a few remaining open, convenience, beer, or restaurants.

Here we tried papaya wine, which when cold is drinkable, and which when warm might be good for a sauce. The corresponding German traditional sausages (a little bland) and sauerkraut were much better than in other German colonies in the continent.

In addition to the appeal of the place, we enjoyed our conversation with Andrés, Alberto y Alberto, three gentlemen we encountered in the hotel and with whom we discussed their and our interests, and who also gave us advice on travel in Venezuela. Their recommendations were clear, precise, and assured, their warmth most positive, and so with salutations, and with their advice in mind, we went to bed (in a most robust bed), and adjusted our travel plans accordingly.

The following day we went to El Limón, a town adjacent to the Henry Pittier National Park, famous for its birds. Unfortunately mist and bureaucracy prevented us from viewing the bird life in the park, hence we ended up watching “Rio” in the local cinema.

Besos a todos,

Alan y Marce

P.S. This journey was a good reflection of Venezuela, 400 Km of contrasts. The following day we head for Morrocoy.
